Garage door springs do one of the hardest jobs in your home โ they counterbalance a door that can weigh 150โ400 lbs, cycling up and down thousands of times over their lifespan. Most springs are rated for 10,000 cycles, which works out to roughly 7โ10 years of average use.
When a spring starts to fail, it doesn't always break all at once. Often there are warning signs days or weeks before the snap โ and if you catch them early, you can schedule a replacement before you're locked out of your own garage.
The Door Opens Unevenly or Tilts to One Side
Most residential garage doors use two springs โ one on each side. If one spring is weakening faster than the other, the door will rise crookedly. You'll notice one side lifting faster, or the door looking slightly tilted when open. This uneven tension puts extra strain on the opener and cables.
The Door Is Heavier Than Usual When Lifted Manually
Disconnect your opener and try lifting the door by hand. A properly balanced door should feel almost weightless โ the spring tension does the heavy lifting. If the door feels like you're lifting a car, the springs have lost tension and are no longer doing their job. A door this heavy will eventually burn out your opener motor.
Operating a door with weak springs damages the opener and risks the door falling. We offer same-day spring replacement across Los Angeles.

Springs naturally make some noise as they stretch and compress โ a little squeaking is normal and fixed with lubrication. But grinding sounds mean the coils are rubbing against each other, a sign the spring is losing shape. A sudden loud bang, often described as a gunshot inside the garage, almost always means the spring has snapped completely.
The Door Reverses Before Fully Closing, or Won't Open More Than 6 Inches
Modern openers have built-in force sensors. When a spring is weak, the opener senses extra resistance and reverses the door as a safety measure โ the door goes down a few inches, then back up. Similarly, if the opener opens the door only 6 inches before stopping, it may be hitting a safety limit because the spring can't provide enough support to lift the full weight.
You Can See a Gap in the Spring Coil
Look up at the torsion spring above your door (or the extension springs running alongside the tracks). A broken torsion spring will have a visible 2โ3 inch gap in the middle of the coil. An extension spring may look stretched out and deformed. Either way โ that's a broken spring and the door should not be operated until it's replaced.
Safety warning: Never attempt to replace or adjust garage door springs yourself. Springs are under extreme tension โ a spring that snaps during DIY repair can cause serious injury. This is one of the most dangerous home repairs there is. Always call a licensed technician.
What Happens If You Ignore a Failing Spring?
A spring that's limping along puts the rest of the system under stress. Here's the chain reaction:
- Opener motor burns out โ it's doing all the lifting the spring should handle
- Cables fray or snap โ they're carrying unbalanced loads
- Door falls suddenly โ posing a serious risk to cars, pets, and people below
- Tracks bend โ under the extra weight and stress
Catching a spring early typically means a simple repair. Ignoring it until the opener burns out too can turn a quick fix into a much bigger job โ and a door that crashes down is a safety emergency.
How Long Does Spring Replacement Take?
A licensed technician can replace one or both torsion springs in about 1โ2 hours. We always recommend replacing both springs at the same time โ if one broke, the other is usually close behind, and replacing them together costs far less in labor than two separate service calls.
